Frequently asked questions

An occupational therapist (OT) helps people carry out everyday activities such as dressing, eating, writing, bathing, playing and working, using exercises, adaptive techniques, splints and home changes. An OT is a trained allied health professional with a BOT or MOT degree, not an MBBS doctor, and works alongside your doctor. Adults often need an OT after a stroke, hand injury or Parkinson's disease, and children for developmental or sensory difficulties.
Yes. Occupational therapy can help children with autism or ADHD build skills such as handwriting, fine motor control, attention, self-care, play and coping with sensory sensitivities to noise, touch or movement. It works best when started early, when parents practise the activities at home, and when it is combined with guidance from a paediatrician or paediatric neurologist. Progress is gradual, and the therapist sets goals and reviews them regularly.
After a stroke or brain injury, an OT works on the skills needed for independence: using the weak arm and hand, dressing, eating, bathing, toileting, memory and planning tasks, and returning to work or household roles. They also suggest aids, such as adapted cutlery or a shower seat, and changes at home to prevent falls. Starting early, practising daily and involving the family gives the best results.
A session usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes. A hand injury may need a few weeks, while stroke recovery or developmental needs may need regular sessions over several months, with daily home practice. Video sessions suit parent coaching, home set-up and exercise guidance, and some therapists offer home visits. The fee depends on the therapist and the setting, and is shown on each therapist's profile on Global Neuro and Spine Care (GNSC) before you book.
Check for a BOT or MOT qualification, experience with your situation (paediatric, neurological or hand therapy), and a clear assessment with written goals at the first session. A good therapist explains the plan, teaches you a home programme and reviews progress. Ask how many sessions are expected and how improvement will be measured. On GNSC you can compare qualifications, experience, languages and consultation type before booking.
