Frequently asked questions

A neuro interventionist treats blood-vessel diseases of the brain and spine by passing thin tubes through an artery, usually from the groin or wrist, without opening the skull. The same role is also called an endovascular specialist, interventional neurologist or neurointerventional radiologist, depending on whether the doctor trained in neurology, neurosurgery or radiology. They treat stroke from a blocked artery, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and narrowed neck arteries.
A neuro interventionist works from inside the blood vessel through a small puncture, which usually means a shorter hospital stay. A neurosurgeon operates through the skull or spine and treats a wider range of problems such as tumours and head injuries. Some aneurysms are best treated by coiling and others need clipping by surgery, depending on size, shape and location, so the two specialists often decide together.
Very urgent. Thrombectomy removes a clot from a large brain artery and works best when done as early as possible, usually within the first six hours and, in carefully selected patients shown by scans, up to 24 hours. Call 112 and go to a stroke-ready hospital for sudden weakness on one side, face drooping, trouble speaking or loss of vision. The procedure is done through an artery without opening the skull and often takes around one to two hours.
Neither is better for everyone. Coiling fills the aneurysm with fine platinum coils through an artery, while clipping is open surgery that places a small clip at the neck of the aneurysm. The choice depends on the aneurysm's size, shape and location and on your health. Coiling cost depends on the hospital, the coils or stent used and the length of stay, and can run into several lakh rupees, so ask for a written itemised estimate.
These are established procedures, but they carry risks such as bleeding, clots or blood-vessel injury, which your doctor will explain for your case. Many patients stay a few days in hospital, and recovery after stroke depends on the damage already done. On Global Neuro and Spine Care (GNSC) you can book a video consultation to discuss your angiogram or scan reports before deciding; it is not for emergencies.
